Aside from the stereotypical Spanish passing ability, close control, and vision, his main attributes are his versatility and long range shot. He can play on either wing or in the center, and is fully two-footed. Also, he can threaten goal from 30 meters out if given any space. His only real downside is age (at 27, only a few more peak years), but other than that, terrific signing. Perhaps the greatest testament to his quality is that Villarreal went from 4th to 18th after he left

I would even venture to say most important. One could argue for van Persie (scoring goals that no one else scores) and Koscielny (Arsenal’s best defender) as being more important, but I think Arteta is the one person in the side who is irreplaceable. Perhaps Wilshere or (potentially) Sahin could replace him, but no one has both the technical skill and the positional discipline in midfield to replace Arteta.

But i’m afraid Song leaves us for Barcelona. I think, he is at least important as Arteta is. Arteta gives us ball retention, but last season Song played by far the best trough-balls. So who gives us this vertical style of play, when he leaves? And even more important: Song is the best defensive player in our midfield.
